Presentation Title:

Healing Through Connection: Understanding Our Need For Growth-Fostering Relationships, How Disconnection Develops, & Therapeutic Choice Points For Connection

Presentation Description:

Learning to understand how disconnection develops within our bodies and nervous systems are important steps in helping clients gain both self- and body-awareness. As we help clients acknowledge their own disconnection and the ways it’s no longer serving them, it opens up the opportunity for creating choice points for coming back into healthy connection with themselves, others, and the world.

We will briefly review relational-cultural theory and polyvagal theory and use them to be our guiding lens on the journey of learning about the development of internal and external signs of disconnection. In addition, we will spend time exploring several strategies for helping clients reconnect with themselves, others, and the world around them. Lastly, we will engage in an experiential activity so that you can feel some connection for yourself.

Presenter Bio:

Sarah Shelton (she, her, hers) is a Licensed Professional Counselor with specialized training in developmental and relational trauma healing and recovery. She helps support and guide adults into becoming more functional, regulated, and connected adults, with hopes that they can move into healthier relationships with themselves, others, the planet, and their version of a higher power.

Sarah is the owner and founder of Home Body Counseling (HBC). HBC was named with intention around her gentle approach to therapy and passion for creating connection within a disconnected world. Specifically, HOME is about connecting with yourself, BODY is about connecting with your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual bodies, and COUNSELING is about connecting within the therapeutic relationship—each necessary parts for cultivating authenticity, self-healing, and co-regulation, respectively.

Sarah uses Peter Levine’s Somatic Experiencing, David Grand’s Brainspotting, Francine Shapiro’s Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy, and Pia Mellody's Post Induction Therapy as part of her HBC Approach. She takes an integrative approach and her therapeutic perspective stems from attachment theory, psychodynamic psychology, polyvagal theory, and body-oriented therapies to help address and understand the interconnected ways that our early childhood and lived adult experiences have on our ability to create and sustain healthy relationships.

Sarah is a born and raised Texan and lived her childhood in The Woodlands, TX. She attained her Bachelor’s in Psychology at the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2014, and her Master’s in Counseling Psychology at Abilene Christian University in 2018. Her therapy practice currently serves The Woodlands and Houston, though she has the ability to reach others in Texas through teletherapy. She enjoys cuddling with her fur babies, being in nature, going to concerts, traveling with her husband, spending time with her family, and playing soccer with her friends.
