Law Enforcement’s Piece of the Puzzle- Encountering People with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Marisa Goodwin, M.A., BCBA, LBA, earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Florida and her Master of Arts in Behavior Analysis from the University of Houston-Clear Lake, ultimately culminating in her earning her BCBA in 2019.

As of 2018 the Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimated that 1 in 59 individuals are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). As the number of individuals with ASD rises so does the likelihood that law enforcement will encounter individuals with autism. Some have estimated that by the age of 21 nearly 20% of individuals with autism have been stopped or questioned by law enforcement and nearly 5% of these encounters end with the individual being detained.

The purpose of the police training is to teach officers the different behaviors and characteristics associated with ASD as well as provide recommendations on how to improve interactions between individuals with autism and police officers. Additionally, this presentation will cover police officer’s reaction to the training and data collected on the effectiveness of the training.
