Program Description:
This program will explore the value of yogic practices in the clinical setting, particularly when treating complex trauma. The complexity of embodied trauma will be explored, as well as the benefits of utilizing yoga as an adjunctive element in clinical practice. There will be a short seated experiential trauma-informed yoga practice appropriate for participants with no previous yoga experience. No mats or special clothing are necessary.
Objectives:
1. Participants will learn the integral role of the body in trauma treatment
2. Participants will understand the benefits of integrating yoga into clinical work
3. Participants will learn the core components of the THRIVE trauma-informed yoga model
4. Participants will be given concrete ideas to of how to safely introduce yoga into therapeutic work with groups and individuals.
Presenter Information:
Elizabeth is the owner of Mindful Psychotherapy in the Heights, Houston. Elizabeth has 20 years of clinical experience. She has worked in various inpatient and outpatient settings prior to establishing her private practice. These include nonprofit settings such as the Children’s Assessment Center, the Council on Recovery, and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Pediatric OCD Intensive Outpatient program as well as the Menninger Clinic, where she spent several years working in the Compass unit for young adults. She is a clinical supervisor and has served as adjunct faculty at the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Houston. Elizabeth has been a certified yoga instructor for 10 years, and has taught in various yoga studios in Houston and Pittsburgh, PA. Elizabeth obtained specialized training in trauma-sensitive yoga at the Trauma Center in Massachusetts. She founded the THRIVE trauma-informed yoga program as a way to help people create a trusting relationship with their bodies. Elizabeth considers herself an eternal student and is currently pursuing advanced training in Psychoanalysis at the Psychoanalytic Center in Houston, TX.
